Ishmael Ntenje

Program Coordinator -- Malawi

Ishmael is a social scientist, educator, and advocate for the power of art as a tool for civic engagement and community transformation. A graduate of the University of Malawi with a degree in Social Science, Ishmael is passionate about using creative expression, particularly hip hop and art, as a medium for disseminating critical information and fostering dialogue around human rights and development.

In 2021, he spearheaded the project Kodi Mumadziwa? ("Did You Know?"), which translated the Bill of Rights into a compelling five-episode hip hop series, making legal language accessible and engaging for young people and marginalized communities. His work sits at the intersection of cultural relevance and social change, amplifying voices often excluded from mainstream conversations.

Ishmael is a partner at Patchwork Planet through his involvement with HipHop for Development, a social enterprise that promotes artistic innovation for civic education and empowerment. Through performances, workshops, and media projects, Ishmael continues to explore how storytelling and rhythm can inspire civic participation and transform societies from the ground up.
